Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003
Legal deposit has existed in English law since 1662. It helps to ensure that the nation’s published output (and thereby its intellectual record and future published heritage) is collected systematically, to preserve the material for the use of future generations and to make it available for readers within the designated legal deposit libraries."
Legal Deposit
By law, a copy of every UK print publication must be given to the British Library by its publishers, and to five other major libraries that request it. This system is called legal deposit and has been a part of English law since 1662.
The Legal Deposit Libraries within the UK are:
-
The British Library
-
The National Library of Scotland
-
The National Library of Wales
-
the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford
-
the University Library, Cambridge
-
the Library of Trinity College, Dublin
aSys Publishing and the Legal Deposit System
aSys Publishing is a facilitator of self publishing and it it is the author's legal responsibility to make sure that his/her book is submitted to the Legal Deposit libraries. aSys Publishing can arrange submission in accordance with Legal Deposit for the fees detailed below.
If an author decides that he/she does not want aSys Publishing to manage his/her Legal Deposit submission, it is the author's legal responsibility to ensure that he/she submits his/her book within 30 days of publication. In this case, the author must immediately inform aSys Publishing of his/her decision and aSys Publishing will pass on the author's details to the British Library.
aSys Publishing offers two options for legal deposit submission. The first option is to handle the legal deposit submission electronically. To use this option, the publishing package selected must include an eBook. The second option is to make a physical book submission, this option is more expensive because physical books must be purchased and shipped at the author's expense.
Libraries | Book Cost | Shipping | Admin Fee | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Electronic Submission | All | N/A | N/A | £30 |
Print Submission | The British Library | £5 | £5 | £30 |

-
Print Submission: The example costs above only include submitting to the British Library. As detailed above, the other five libraries could request further book copies, although this doesn't happen often.
-
Electronic Submission: The quoted price detailed above includes all six lending libraries and carries no additional shipping fees. The electronic submission service is only available if the publishing package includes an eBook.
